A Raven perches in the balcony of laira’s room.

‘Soosh..soosh, fly away’ laira’s mother Mrs Nelumboo makes an annoying noise clapping both her hands to scare the bird.  ‘kaw kaw’,it makes an angry sound, hovering above her head making 2-3 circles before it leaves.

‘Why are you making so much noise early in the morning mom?’  laira asks, waking up lazily, covering her ears with the pillows.

‘Nothing dear. Just that bird. Been seeing it, perched on this  balcony for quite a few days now. So, I was trying to drive it off’.

Why? It’s just a bird. Must have a nest near mom.‘ Laira questions, yawning, pulling up her hair to make a messy bun.

‘True. But not just any bird laira. It’s a crow. You know, how i feel about crows..’ Her mother answers in a concerned tone, handing her a mug of hot chocolate drink.

‘They bring ominous news. Beside, they live in flocks. It’s rather unusual to be seeing one out of it’s roost at this season. And nesting here, that also alone.’

‘Seriously’ laira throws her mother a disbelieving look.

‘Why are we having a talk about some bird early in this morning?  So what if it is a crow? Don’t be so superstitious Mom. They are birds. They have wings, they can fly and be anywhere they want to be at’

‘Beside i don’t suppose English crows bring ominous news ’. She giggles.

‘I suppose’ her mother smiles too.  ‘May be i am overthinking..’

‘But from where i come, crows were called the  messengers of death and bad news. I grew up believing the tales your grand mother told me about them. So don’t blame an old school for believing in stuffs she was taught to believe in’.

‘Nope. I don’t blame you. I blame grand-ma, for all her scary stories.’ laira responds instant, remembering that, she had to be in good terms with her mom today no matter what.

Dosen’t matter what she says, my answer has to be  yes..Make her happy and you will get to be happy when you step outside of this suffocating apartment’ she adds in to her mental note.

‘Thank you’ Mrs Nelumboo pats her head with delight.

While laira sips in her hot chocolate drink eagerly, Mrs Nelumboo watches her daughter eat a proper food after long time. Quite relieved to see her appetite back to normal after back and forth periods of ill helath, she questions.

‘ I am concerned  about you laira. Are you okay? You seem so tired and drained of energy all the time nowdays. Is it about the gap year dear?’

‘No Mom’ laira replies, still busy, slurping on her drink and taking a large bite of her morning sandwich, simultaneously.

‘If it is dear, then i  don’t want you to  worry. I promise you, it’s just this year. Next year, we will have enough saving for you to start on your university. Your Dad and i have talked about it’. Her mother adds again

‘I promise it’s not that’ Laira reassures her, this time more clearer. ‘ I ‘m actually glad i am taking a gap year. That way, I will have enough time to think which sub i want to pursue with’

‘Then what is it? There is definately something wrong with you nowdays’

‘I don’t know. But.. I feel all right. I just had a bad flu. Nothing to be worried about’.

‘All right. If that’s what you say’ Mrs Nelumboo finally gives in.

‘Oh that reminds me. Your friend Keisha called in last night. I didn’t want to wake you up, so i told her i will make sure you call her back after you are up. Your cellphone is in the drawer. Check there if she left you any messages.’

Their Happy Story. :)

What makes life a happy story? It isn’t math where 2+2=4 and you have countless formulas to reach to your ‘one’ solution. Infact i don’t even know  the definition of ‘happy’ what does it mean? Something that defines my  happiness isn’t bound to define  yours ,is it? Was Cindrella truely happy marrying the prince? Some say ‘yes’ others say ‘no’. Well i think only Cindrella knows  and ofcourse the writer.

Anyways, here is a story i wanted to share today that i think met a happy ending..what would you think.. do comment if you want at the end.  This is brother Deecha’s real life story about the girl he used to know. Before i start narrating in his own words, here is a question for you..’Do you think true love  exsistS?

You remind me of a girl whom i used to know a long time ago..(she was from same ethnicity as me)  That  girl, i had  fallen crazily in love with. I don’t know what happened then..i was blindfolded like a mad man. And just to spark a little intrest in her for me..i was willing to go through any lengths. I used to follow her around like a shadow.. everywhere, anywhere she would go, trying my best to grab any chances i could get to win her heart. But in vain, all those efforts yeilded me nothing but more frustation and desperation..

Needless to say  i proposed. A number of times..ended up getting rejected heartlessly. Still, that wasn’t stopping me. For I was determined she was the one i was supposed to be with. Why was I? I don’t know. It was obvious, everyone could see she didn’t understand a thing of how i felt.. For her, i was nothing but a pampered spoilt son of a rich family. Her parents weren’t fond of me either. They had warned me to stay away from their daughter on number of ocassions. But i couldn’t. They were very strict and too controlling.

Months and a year of persistence. Finally things started setting back on place for me. I was really happy. Everything was going right for us.. till that one day, she left for kathmandu and never returned back.

I started worrying..when she didn’t show up after few days like she had promised me to. So, I came to the city myself, searching for her. I looked everywhere i possibly could but i couln’t find a trace. I wish i had stopped then because eventually what i found out much later, devastated me. She had  flown  off with her parents to a diffrent country, never to be back again. And not a word was said to me, about it.

I couldn’t help but feel sorry for brother Deecha then and i couldn’t believe how  arrogant that lady was. This was the man who would have  brought the stars and the moon to her feet( well !!) . But, what he said  to me after he finished his story warmed my heart a little.

‘I wish things were different’ he said. ‘But i don’t regret a thing now. I did everything i could.’

I didn’t know ‘what love is’ then but i think i understood what he meant when he said that. ‘When you  have done possibly everything to keep that one person.. yet if it still doesn’t work out, no matter how restless the heart is, it finally learns to settle in peace… ‘

The fact is, even before he shared his story firsthand to me, i had heard his mother tell her version of his story  many times .  She would say ‘i don’t know dear what did that girl do..Deechan was like a mind controlled puppet. He wouldn’t listen a thing i had to say. And then, when that girl disappeared he came to the city looking for her. In this place, where he knew noone and noone knew him. What did he do? How did he live?I   asked him to come back many times but he wouldn’t. i was scared, worried he might do something in haste‘.

At the time, I met brother Deechan (at kathmandu ), he had a little daughter and a beautiful wife. They were a lovely couple and a happy family together. Even, how he met his wife  has a story. Some people’s life are are like movies..aren’t they? Good for you,  I am noosey  hahha so here is what i found  out.

It so happens that, his now wife had been madly in love with a boy during her high school years as well. Equally crazy,  to the extent that she had cut her hands when he had refused to accept her feelings. After pursuing him what sounded like  many times times, she was utterly heartbroken.

And now, here they were..two heartbroken individuals, their edges coming together to make a complete heart. So lovely together.  My God bless them.

A sharp burning smell pricks Sebastian’s nose.

He quickely throws a glance at the fireplace worried, something must have caught fire. However, the fire blazes contained within the metal frame.

It dosen’t take him long to realize, what gave that peculiar odor. A  cloud of myst like before, was gradually enveloping him from below. He kicks off his feet but they wouldn’t move. Soon  they start feeling numb and  his whole body goes limp. The dreadful experience  returns , his vision gets dimmer and he starts swirling with everything around him..

Round..round..round..Sebastian closes his eyes tired and nauseasus.

The motion comes to a halt, like his freefall was suddenly  being caught midway in the air by the invisible ropes tied to his body. It jerks him with a strong force and vanishes abruptly, leaving him obnoxious and drained.

He now stood on a large  room with a bed placed on its centre, book shelves in one corner,a  closet on the other and  a table with  a chair arranged near its window overlooking a large beautiful garden.  Like other rooms on the mansion this too was empty. Only occasional chirps of birds from nearby tree  soothed its desolation.

Tightly closing his lips, Sebastian immediately pushes his fingers on his mouth to stop  from vomiting.

Wouldn’t want to do memory travel anytime soon..i feel sick..

Another sour water brass. His stomach does a painful flip. Making  a quick run for open window,he throws himself  against the wooden table.

‘Much better…’

The gentle hush of cold fresh wind hits his face, his nostrils and  calms his insides.

After a while, waking up from a short nap, Sebastian rubs his eyes. How long had he been asleep he had no idea. The sun was almost down now and was  casting his shadows unusually longer and impressively on the floor. But he felt refreshed, relieved his body was back to health, quicker and  faster to response like he was used to.

He lays back on his torso and reaches out for a hard cover notebook,  from  the stack of books arranged side by side neatly on the corner of table. Holding it over to his face, he  flips on the pages. All sorts of pencil sketched drawings of black Ravens birds stare at him with mean penetrating eyes from it.

‘Raven…’ Sebastian sighs , gently closing the notebook.

‘Your mother dosen’t love you’…

Sebastian  hears a firm voice of a man speak on corridor, behind the half open door, shortly after. He knew  it was Raven’s father. He had heard the man scream of fright and curse more than hundred times. Slowely tiptoeing to the direction  the noise was coming from, he peeks out from the door.

Standing next to his father he sees Raven, almost half his height, intimidated by the man’s presence with his head held low staring  into nothingness of floor. Sadness clearly  surfaced  on his innocent face.

‘She will leave us all alone and marry that man she calls her friend. She will take all of what we have and leave us to suffer.’

‘I tell you, she will be walking out on us anytime soon’

The bombarding of words and accuses  goes on and on..

‘Mother won’t do anything of that to us!’ he hears  Raven finally defend on a strong voice. But, somehow it didn’t feel right to Sebastian because he knew  Raven did not believe what he said when he said that. He was so used to Raven’s nature by now that he recognized  the tone Raven spoke with in  confidence but this statement surely did not sound like Ravens.

‘Tell me where she was yesterday and day before yesterday. Did she tell you where she went?’ Raven’s father  hammers,  flustering with anger now.

‘She is getting divorce from me. She will take both of your custody and force you and your sister  to live with your stepdad. And that won’t be good because I wouldn’t be able to do anything then’ he smirks.

Raven doesnot say a word.

He faces away from his father, diverting his attention to the closed door nearby. Judging by the corncerned look he gave, Sebastian was sure the room belonged to Rose.  He could see Raven was worried if Rose heard their conversation or not. If she did, it wouldn’t have surprised him because Rose had developed extraordinary sense of hearing and smell to compensate for her blindness. She could even hear Raven tear the the pages of his notebook from her room.

After a long while of one sided argument, Raven’s father finally rests his heavy hands on his son’s fragile shoulders and speaks. This time his tone much lower and more affectionate   ‘Son, I am not worried about you. You will get through, you always do but what about Rose?’

Sebastian on hearing that, grimaces with disgusted face.

Clearly the wicked man  was tormenting the child mentally and driving him against his own mother. It was on his nature to spot a wolf under the sheep’s skin. He knew by the look of the man’s face, that he triumphed over the control he owned on his son’s thoughts. If only he could get his hands into his throat and severe his foul speaking tongue..Sebastian grits his teeth.

Raven however stands frozen, speechless even  long after his father leaves, alone on the corridor. He continues to stare on his sister’s closed door, lost again on his thoughts.  Then  and there at the moment, Sebastian sees a flicker of what looked like a malicious beast on his eyes that was now  aroused after a long, long  slumber.

It catches Sebastian by surprise on hearing Raven’s thought. Not the fact that he could hear whatever Raven was thinking but that his sister who had peculiarly beautiful eyes, was blind. It made him  wonder,  if he could have ever guessed that, had he not listened to his thoughts. This finally made sense, why the hall was empty and so spacious.

‘Rose’ he hears Raven call her, after a long  silence.

‘Have I ever described you what fire looks like?’he asks.

‘Yes. Brother you said, mostly it was warm like yellow but more  passionate like red..but sometimes its fiery red and extremely bright  yellow like anger is,  if I remember correct’ she replies gleefully looking at his direction.

‘oh did I say that?I must have forgotten then’

‘yes. You did.’

Sebastian senses the enthusiasm in her words as she spoke. He did not have to guess, to know, how she depended on her brother’s words, to draw images of an object into her own mind. His words alone were the bricks to a castle she was building in the air.

‘Donot ever hesistate  to ask me, whatever you want to know about. I can describe you..i will try my best. ok?’ says Raven, more corncerned now. His gaze fixed, with scrupulous attention to her eyes.

A soft side of Sebastian’s jeykll and hyde heart melts at that time. He bends forward curiously. Crossing his long fingers together with  elbows resting on his knees, he positions himself face to face with the boy.   Ofcourse  this boy did not have a sharper nosebridge and well defined jawlines. His chubby flushed cheeks and heart shaped face with plump lips made him look anything other than a full fledged  predator Raven was.  But, there was no doubt he was  Raven. As innocient as he looked he was going to be  a reaper, a cold soul who never forgave, never forgot and  perhaps never loved. A wave of sadness surges over Sebastian as he lets the grim thoughts overflow him, how he hated a part of his human heart that felt all these petty emotions.

‘How different is love from hate? Isn’t it a very thin line?’ Sebastian hears himself asking the boy ,who stood frozen infront of him, in the seconds of time, that Raven’s memory had preserved.

‘Resurrecting your father to punish..i understand.. but why laira?’

No answer, his words  drifts away unwanted  in the silence of the hall.

‘Brother’ the little girl’s voice interrupts Sebastian’s flowing thoughts.

‘ You have said that to me more than hundred times. You know I will ask you when I need to..’ her soft voice jingles with reassuring tone.

Raven smiles. His tearful eyes gives away a glimpse of his painful heart. She was his precious. No one in the world mattered. He would forever be there to protect her, to describe her colors, rainbows and butterflies that she would never see on her own.

‘However..’  Rose  pauses, narrowing her eye brows, looking closely on the fire.

‘The next door neighbour…You never describe me anything about her.I am curious’.

She pokes the dying  fire with metal rod, that pierces through one of the holes in the net like metal frame kept infront of it and blows a few times. Once the fire is settled and burning into flame again, she turns her head to Raven and casts him a questioning look.

‘Did words finally fail you brother?’

Raven coughs instinctively.

He coughs again  and  coughs even harder ,desperate to avoid the question. And strangely enough, to avoid the stare his sister was giving him, he takes a step back, stumbles and  falls to the cold floor with a loud thud.

‘Did you fall that hard on love, huh?’Rose teases.

‘I may be blind but I am no fool’ she adds chuckling, pointing her little forefinger on him.

‘Damn it!!’ Raven hits his fist into the palm of his hand, embarrassed and flushed. ‘Just tell me you like pretending blind..’. He laughs

‘I wish I could.’ She pulls her lower lids of both eyes, cupps  her cheeks with little hands making them look  protruding, then  sticks out her tongue and laughs too.

Sebastian listens to their conversation joyfully. Their heartful laughs,  echoes to him like wind charms in the emptiness of the room while  his lonely bystanding soul  soaks in  Euphoria, to have witnessed purity of love  in a form  that   he never experienced.

‘If only i had some one like that….’

Standing  infront of the large family picture with a golden frame , hanging on  the middle of the wall, Sebastian finds himself  tracing the potraits of familiar faces of  a genuinely happy couple and  their children.

He recognizes the man as Raven’s father. It was no surprise, the man, now had the same face he had  at the time the portrait was made, despite being reborn several times. That was a perk of being reborn. Having same soul meant being the same person in every aspects..unlike reincarnation where ones  soul is free and one is born a complete new individual.

His hair jet black, combed to perfection with neat side parting that high lighted his strong browlines and sharp features, Raven’s father looked like a gentleman of means and appeal.  The man distinctly had some of the his son’s  looks and a smile that was hard not to fall for. Although, now much older than what he looked in potrait, age had been still been kind . For,  even with wrinkles, terrible bags under his eyes and white hair with patches of baldness, the man undeniably  looked good on his 60s .

He made Raven who he is..

‘How can one possibly know what changes a person? Could this man who looks so contended and happy enough to be with his family be so viscious so as to be a murderer himself?’ Sebastian questions.

But again, years of life near these beings called humans had taught Sebastian many things.. With them change was ineveitable. They always pursued what was unattainable, neglected what they owned and wandered in nothingness for pursuit of greed, lust and desires. ‘I want more’ had always been their universal motto for generation and generations since the cave man first appeared, he had read somewhere along the pages in his father’s observation notebook of humans.

‘Scums. No better than animals with useless brains. Can’t tame them..they wont be loyal, can’t love them..they can’t love. So just think and treat them as food ’ was what aunt phili always said to him, worried he might follow the footsteps his father followed.

Raven is not bad..he had argued once.

‘That’s because he is not  a human. He was born a demon’ she had snapped back .

He lets out a long sigh, steering away his eyes from the portrait of smiling man  to  the boy and to his little sister sitting near the fire place.

If only they knew what was coming in future..

Sebastian then  paces back slowely  and  glides to sit on a sofa nearest to Raven, he watches as  Raven’s memories slowely starts unfolding  themselves to him.

‘Brother, is not mom coming back home?’ Raven’s  sister asks, looking at the flames burning on the fire place.

‘No’ he replies. ‘She called in to say she has a important meeting with a client’

Raven stares at his sister’s preety angelic face and into her eyes. He could tell, she was sad and lost in deep thoughts  now, after hearing that, judging by  the patterns of light reflection  inside her large pupils, even though he could only see little from a distance where he was standing. It was integrated to Raven like a instinctive behaviour, to look into his sister’s eyes and  assess her thoughts  before he could say anything. Strange enough this  behavior he developed had helped him to cater to Rose needs even when she was a little baby and couldn’t communicate, while their own mother felt frustrated of trying hard to understand.

They were colored  light blue or perhaps light green, her eyes, no one could tell. But they were mysteriously beautiful and made Rose stick out in the crowd. ‘Feels like looking into stars when I see you smile’ Raven would often tell her, which were indeed true, for they sparkled like thousand fireflies kept together, bottled ,in the small world she saw.

‘If only Rose could see what fire looks like. If only she was not blind’

Raven monologues sadly, watching her stare, vacantly at the fire with eyes that were blinking only a few times, seeing nothing but black all around her.

(Really thankful to those who like Entwined 🙂 I am sorry this is the real edited version of Entwined 18.)

Sebastian stirs uncomfortably.

There is a mysterious aura around Raven, who is absorbed completely enjoying in watching his father moan of pain, without moving a flinch.  His aura, suddenly builds in stronger and takes a form of a fog that rapidly spreads. Sebastian takes a step back  unsure of the entity that was now rapidly evolving. However,  it soon engulfs him, trapping him inside the dark haziness. The myst burns his nostrils and stings his eyes. Soon after, his vision gets dimmer,  feets become numb and he starts to  swirl..like being caught in middle of hurricane.

Sebastian opens his eyes finally, what seemed like hours  later and finds himself standing in an elegant hall.

The moonlight that penetrates through the  large glass window casts his shadow on the thick red carpet placed over its well furnished wooden floor. In the far corner to the right where the moon beam refuses to reach, he sees a fireplace, with an orange red hue of bright flames burning . There on that corner , a shadow moves on the wall  with ocassional noise of clinking metals.

A girl’ Sebastian says to himself, noticing her long hair in the back.

He  quickly takes long strides to her, in a hope she might have some answers to his puzzle  but suddenly stops by the noise of approaching footsteps..

Sebastian gasps at what he sees next.

Infront of him stood a boy in his early teens with black hair and black eyes dressed in blue pajamas. Undoubtedly this boy, was  Raven ‘the traveller’ for Sebastian couldn’t  have mistaken those eyes, not even if he was placed in a class room of boys who looked similar.

‘Raven what happened?’he whispers bending low.

The boy however dosen’t answer. He looks at him straight, ignores his question and walks forward ,passing him through.

Sebastian flinches.

Something had happened to him. The realization now, gives him an unpleasant feeling  in the pit of his stomach. Because whatever that had happened, had made  him look transparent than a glass and weigh lesser than the air itself. In other words,he was invisible like a ghost.

He takes a long breath and moves uncomfortably pacing back and forth in the room.

‘Did I time travel? Or did I enter into Raven’s memories?’

It must be his memories because vampires can’t time travel into past..we have eternity ahead..he reasons.

The curse was to live endless tommorrows not to dwell into yesterday..he recalls the words his father said.

Finally pulling himself up together, after reaching a conclusion he was in Raven’s memories and not in his past, he reaches out to the girl, the boy Raven stood next to.

Upon coming close to the little girl,he examines her carefully.

The girl looked  like she was half the age younger than litte Raven was. She had white complexion with hair that was dark brown  and eyes light blue like that of Raven’s mother ‘the priestess’ unlike Raven himself, who had inherited most of his appearance from his father.

Siblings..he exclaims.

But what does this mean??

It still didnot answer why he was inside Raven’s head, where surely Raven would have never wanted him to be wondering around..

Sebastian scans the room like a hawk with his keen eyes from massive chandelier in the roof  to the large ancient looking golden  flower vases  kept on the doorways. For a hall that was as big as this one, Sebastian found it rather odd to be much spacious. There was nothing much in the room beside a red thick carpet laid on the floor  where he first stood, a fire place with  couple of large sofas placed around it and a piano standing on a far end nearer the window.

It reminded him of his room back at the palace that was as  empty and hauntingly silent as this hall was.

On the opposite wall, Sebastian soon notices picture frames  arranged in the top of the shelf that held large collection of books. He rushes to grab the pictures. These pictures  were Ravens. Excited at the discovery, Sebastian starts holding them one by one and observing them individually.

To guess Raven’s nature as a human when he was young ,looking at the photos was a difficult task even for Sebastian. In some he looked like an introvert boy weakly smiling for camera, in some he looked like being mobbed by boys and girls his age who adored him, in some he looked athlethic wearing a football jersey who was desperate to get the team a win while in some he looked silent and focused soul playing a piano.

These pictures to Sebastian were priceless. They reflected every moments his soul bonded brother lived as a human. They carried a story of his soul, days of his lives that he barely talked about. How he wished he was there to see them and protect his innocence from what he had now become.

Sebastian  clinges to each one of them unable to let go, while his eyes captured each of those images in his memories. One on particular he found it very hard to leave. This was the one  Sebastian voted his best.

In the picture, Raven was holding his sister in his arms. Still a fragile newborn then, she was placed neatly and securely wrapped in soft white cotton blankets against his small chest. With a   big grin on his face and eyes that looked like they had just cried Raven carried her proudly like a trophy he was eager to show off.

‘That’s priceless’ Sebastian comments to himself smiling back at the boy on picture.

‘Never seen him so happy all these time’ he sighs sadly.

‘Hey laira…closing up?’ yanjas  calls out running from a distance on his high school uniform.

‘Yes’ she replies.

‘Aw..its such a hot summer. Really wanted to try one of those..heard girls down the corner talking about the stall and..two guys’ he says panting, his hands stretched at elbow joint, bending low.

That would be us’ Sebastian smirks inside his head, waiting for chance to pawn at the boy any moment now.

‘Oh Sebastian..this is yanjas’ introduces laira, noticing his uncomfortable presence, looking at him stare at the boy in uniform. However to her dismay, Sebastian seems ignorant, unlike his usual kind self.

‘laira, you have only half an hour till we pack’ he says sternly. Then, storms away looking as elegant as he could have managed to, after proudly presenting himself  inbetween them, like the great wall of china.

‘Don’t look at her like that. You pedophile’ Sebastian chuckles, extending his hand to pass an icecream to the traveler.

‘She is so happy’ the traveler remarks ignorant of Sebastian’s comment, his eyes fixed at laira’s face, who was now sitting together with yanjas,  visiblly blushing.

‘Its obvious..she is crazy for that guy. And I don’t like it. ’ Sebastian remarks, frowning,  digging back to his icecream.

‘were you that crazy too?’ he questions after a moment curiously.

‘I was more than just crazy’ replies traveler, his eyes still fixed at laira.

‘She was 12 when I first met her. The new girl in the neighbourhood. Everyone wanted to be her friend. But she was just too shy. I liked her from the very first day’ he unfolds, as he tries to remember the events that happened, what now seemed like more than 100yrs ago.

‘And then I would wait to pass by  infront of her gate everytime she appeared so that I could talk to her. I was alone and so was she..’he continues.

‘And we did become good friends. And then one day I lost her’ the traveler pauses, like accidently reading a page out of a storybook he never wanted to know.

‘It was an RTA. Wasn’t it? Accident I mean, the cause of her death the first time’ Sebastian asks.

‘No’ the traveler shooks his head. ‘Even before that.. I lost her.’

‘Because.. I murdered my mom…’

the traveler lets out each of his words hesitatingly, slowely  and carefully, gasping for breath in between, utterly  scared to the very depths of  the pitch darkness this guilt made him feel inside. He clenches his fists and withdraws to the pain his sullen heart made him feel..curled up against the cold wall, covering his face with his hands while Sebastian looked mournfully at his guilty soul.

‘Just the same another day again’ laira sighs looking over to the glass window pane as Miss Kiran continues to teach the class, on top of  her voice.

‘Summer vacation starts from tomorrow. what will I do this time? I don’t even have any plans yet..and its so long… 1 month!’ she exclaims, clutching her skirts, zoning out.

‘Heart has 4 chambers, 2 atrium and 2 ventricles’ a high pitch voice, next to her ear, suddenly startles laira. She looks over with a horrified face, only to find a  short thin  figure standing right  infront of her, smiling.

She gasps, for laira knew this was a smile, that a hunter gave when she spotted her prey.

‘How can something so small be so scary…..’she screams on top of her lungs inside her head as  cold shivers run down her spines.

Having seen that the student is back in her senses, Miss Kiran adjust her specs in her sharp nose, annoyingly  points the  picture of heart on laira’s biology book and walks off.

‘Oh…heart! Yes heart..heart’ laira stammers still perplexed, as her classmates giggle softly in the background, enjoying the encounter.

‘laira, don’t zone out so much when you are in a class. You will get in trouble one day’ shouts Keisha, her classmate and also her dear friend, when they part different ways after school.

‘Sure’ laira replies, embarrassed and thankful that it was the last class of the day.

She throws her bag into the floor as soon as she gets into her room and snuggles inside her bed.

‘Won’t have to wake again so early in the morning’ she smiles.

Sounds of glasses crashing on the floor echoes the house followed by loud noises of two adults quaralling.

‘Oh Dad and Mom are fighting ..Never mind them. Nothing new to worry about’ she says, as she forces herself back to sleep.

Another sound of something hitting the floor wakes laira up. ‘ Today is my birthday you know’ she says to the teddy bear lying motionlessly in the bed.. ‘Isn’t it so sad..nobody remembers it’.

She holds the teddy bear tight into her arms, thinking in her head, if she could just find a genie who could turn her life upside and down  with his clipclap.

‘laira’  ‘Happy Birthday..’ she hears a man speak in a faint beautiful voice..as she tiredly closes her eyes.

‘Thank you’ she replies subconsciously with tears rolling down  her eyes in the middle of the night.

Startled she looks behind only to find a preety young woman staring at her

‘What happened here?’ the traveler wakes disturbed by the noises.

He looks at the lady standing infront of her and falls back to silence.

‘You still are with her..’ the lady, dressed in a yellow ruggage cloak with a hood  speaks after a moment  breaking the silence, her voice shaking while making a statement.

‘what brings you here mother?’asks the traveler.

“Mother?’ exclaims Laira unable to believe that this lady who still looks like she is in her 20’s could be the traveler’s mother.

‘Thank you’ dear says the lady hastily..obviously understanding what little laira meant.

‘when one lives for eternity one forgets to grow old..’she says softly.

Then staring at her son for a moment again, she speaks

‘Let me not be the one to burn you in flames my son for that would be another curse to live with for eternity..’ with tears welling in her eyes.

‘I’m sorry mother’ replies the traveler. His voice filled with grief refusing to face his mother.

A crowd of people wearing same yellow cloak like that of the lady then passes by making a strange noise, like chanting something.

One in the front, a heavily built man with a tattoo of flame made in  middle of his shaved forehead looks at the lady furiously like he dosen’t permit them being seen together and shouts out aloud ‘hell, hell, hell’

The lady on the cloak looks at the man then follows her silently

‘You have a choice mother. Why are you hurting yourself?’ asks the traveler, while his mother silently follows the man.

‘I had a choice son.. I donot have now  but you do. I’m sure you understand’she says

‘Do you feel no pain?’asks the traveler, his voice stammering, almost broken now while his mother walks away, almost making a request for her to stop.

‘I do. Don’t you?’ she looks at him mournfully  from a distance and disappears in the crowd.

Its midnight. The clock has struck 12 sharp. It says the right time to play the ‘hunter’ and the ‘hunted’. Creatures of night crawl out on delight waking up from their graves. Some creep outside from the door behind the closet  dragging  their twisted bodies as they  walk , while some make their way  crawling out, from under the children’s bed.

Woo..hoo..’ one shouts as she creeps in excited under the blankets of an elderly man. With her cold hands touching his face. The  old man shivers and cries for help. ‘Natalie..help me!!she will kill me!’he shouts, running around the room, banging the closed door with all his might. The whole of neighbourhood wakes up,disturbed.

‘Should i call them again?’questions Mr Jonath to his wife. ‘Not again..Miss Natalie already has enough in her hands with her schizophrenic brother‘ Mrs Jonath replies, feeling sorry for Natalie, before turning off the lamp.

Miss Natalie runs up to her brother’s door, sure that he is only hallucinating again. She finds him curled up in one corner beside the bed, his head bend to his knees, his palms pressed tightly against both his ears. ‘Its ok she wont come back. Its ok’ she tries to calm him down and get him back to bed, holding his arms gently and dragging him.

‘I saw her Natalie. I saw Clarrise today’ the man speaks, looking at her terrified , finally opening his eyes after her repeated  persuassion. ‘ She had big hollow eyes and her face looked hideous, her teeth were long and…’the man mumbles like he is still in shock,  his voice fading as he continues. ‘Take this it will make you feel better‘ Natalie replies a moment later, ignoring her brother’s talks, after having him tucked in bed and fumbling through the cabinet for sleeping pill.

It’s been 4nights for Natalie that she  hasn’t have a proper sleep because of her brother’s recurring hallucinations. Mr Raymond her half brother, who is 58 year old, and also a diagnosed case of schizophrenia since past 25years or so was under her care now. Their father had passed away just recently a year back and she had brought  him home, her only living relative from the mental hospital for the funeral procession. After attending to  him for a month or so, she had felt that her brother was doing better than what she was said he was doing at the assylum.  Determined, he could do better, she had sworn she would do everything it took to make his life easier being an RN herself. But it was costing her more than she thought she could have handled. She lets out a long sigh. Eventually she would have to give up..she had her own life too to live and she was still unmarried.

Seeing him asleep after an hour or so, Natalie walks back to her room closing the door gently  behind her. ‘Tring. Tring’a phone call echoes in the silent hall ,making her almost jump with fright.

Must be neighbours’
‘Hello’ what sounded like a voice of a girl speaks. ‘Who is this?’ Natalie questions.

‘Mr Raymond was right you know..Mrs Raymond did come to meet him‘ the voice on the other end of line replies.

Shut up! Who is this?’ she shouts.

The phone line goes dead.

Somewhere far in little laira’s  room, creeps a dark shadow.. It stops, some steps away from her bed, staring at her with a pair of gleaming eyes . After a moment, the shadow takes a form of what appears to be like that of a man. And  removes it’s veil. The face that looks now, is pale white, with beautiful sleek features,  high arched brows and  hair as black as the raven’s coat. His eyes are  black too like charcoal, darker than all the shades present, mysterious and alluring but warning, a kind  that evoked fright without trying, as though it mirrored the depth of unholy itself. On his back, he carried a long heavy weapon, ‘the scythe’. The sharp blade of which shimmered on the moonlight stained with blood, a crying evidence of his very nature.

On the contrary, the look, the Reaper casts to the little girl is diffrent. It is a gaze of sincere pleasure that dances in his eyes, filled with compassion that blindfolds the deadly blend of emotions he was capable of feeling. A Curve of smile soon appears befitting his angelic face, like they will never hesitate to truely embrace the happiness he felt seeing her. But ,he stops, his advancing arms hesitating to embrace her in mid air..realizing that  previlige he had lost long ago..

Putting  his scythe on the ground gently without making a noise,he then kneels down beside the girl’s bed. He puts  his face infront of hers, an inch closer, feeling the exhale of her breath. This was ‘his moment’ the one he had awaited for so long and the one he would look forward to for eternity..being this close to this girl.

‘Took me so long this time to find you laira..’he finally whispers his thoughts aloud, after an hour or so of his silence, sure that the sleeping person would not hear. He lands a soft kiss on her cheek then, gently  like a feather caressing the skin. A Cold touch, laira hussles her hands, pulls up her blanket lazily to cover up her face in sleep.

‘Come to me laira. Lets meet, shall we?’he whispers with sly smile. This time clapping his hands in the midair.
